Old Dog, New Tricks
“Did… did I just catch the car I was chasing or?”
I can’t say that it is fully a relief, not yet anyway. But it is a powerful combination of emotions I’m swimming in after now officially having the new location of Queer Chocolatier ready for business!
Now, it’s on me to deliver on the (re)living the dream (again).
I’ve now spent three distinct times chasing the dream of having a chocolate shop and I do think that this third time may well be the actual charm!
This time, all the components are in place in a way that I’ve not ever been able to enjoy in the past and that, honestly, is scary and exciting in equal measure.
Here I am now with 1) a new, larger, and more central location for my brick and mortar shop, 2) a complement of machinery to make craft chocolate at a reasonable scale, 3) more know-how and resilience in running a business and making chocolate, 4) a small-but-mighty team that have a considerable amount of food handling experience before coming into my employ, and 5) a wage-earning day job plus supportive family that gives me a net to fall into should I stumble.
The Morgan running this iteration of Queer Chocolatier is older, perhaps wiser, but definitely a half-step slower with a bit more wear-and-tear on my body versus when I was running the shop in the Village from 2018-2020.
But I am not going to let the internal doubts that are whispering grow any louder; I’ve been waiting for this opportunity since 2020 when the pandemic impacted my in-person business in a significantly challenging way.
I’ve been waiting for this opportunity to show off my growth as a chocolate maker and to finally grow the business to the size I believe it can achieve.
The chance to operate my business with nothing but winning cards in my hand gives me really no excuse to not be successful, but I suppose the frightening thing is to imagine (and define) the success I want to have and to share in with others.
There are a lot of people I want to support with this business and to repay for their early support they’ve shown me. I want to continue to care for my community and find ways to support and uplift those who are vulnerable. And to do so through the making and selling of chocolate is truly a dream that I’m ready to live once more.
With Queer Chocolatier’s Grand Opening coming on Saturday, October 24th from 10a-5p, I will be so grateful to greet folks by saying “Welcome to Queer Chocolatier!” again and to show everyone the peek behind the curtain of making the chocolate I’ve been quietly making for the last six years! I’ll be happy to hold space for those who want to sit and sip on some drinking chocolate and nibble on scones or indulge in a brownie. I’ve missed those moments so deeply.
Almost as much as I’ve missed the Biscuits and Chocolate Gravy…..
But I do have some new tricks up my sleeve and will be slowly and intentionally delivering on new offerings to folks who walk in our doors to join us!
During the 2026 Soup Crawl fundraiser event for Second Harvest of East Central Indiana, Queer Chocolatier offered up Chocolate Soup Dumplings with Salted Caramel Whipped Cream. Our soup won third-place in the People’s Choice Award out of over 20 other vendors! We may add this to our in-house menu based on how well this treat was received!
Things will, of course, be different this time around and I’m open to seeing what twists and turns this hair-raising (and whitening) plot will reveal. But different isn’t always bad.
And for those of you who won’t be around to visit our shop in person, please consider indulging in placing online orders with us so that we can be connected through our shared love of chocolate! Pre-orders are now open for our resumed shipping to start on October 26th!
I’m pretty sure things will be good and I’m ready for some good!
I hope you’ll join us in the new adventures of Queer Chocolatier!
